Rachel Richards | Bassoon

Rachel Richards began studying the bassoon in addition to playing string bass when she was in the eighth grade. While attending Saint Norbert College for music education, Rachel studied bassoon under Sherri Kelly and Amber Lewis Oosterwaal, and graduated with her degree in instrumental and general music education in 2004. After receiving her degree, Rachel began teaching orchestra for the ACES/Xavier system, which brought her back to Appleton, her hometown. The following year, she began teaching orchestra for the Appleton Area School District and continues to instruct 4-8th grade students on string instruments. Rachel recently earned her master’s degree in Educational Technology from Marian University.

Outside of the school day, Rachel likes to fill her schedule with other instructional opportunities such as conducting the New Horizons Orchestra through the Lawrence Academy of Music, teaching bassoon at band camps, and leading the summer school strings classes.

When she’s not teaching, Rachel enjoys performing with area community bands such as the St. Norbert Community Band, Appleton City Band, and the Little Chute Community Band. She also plays bass for Gary Kuchenbecker’s Old Lager Orchestra, and has performed in several pit orchestras for musicals across the Fox Cities. She is excited to be a part of Chalumeau Winds and enjoys the camaraderie that comes along with making beautiful music together.
